The Witch Doctor's Wife by Tamar Myers

Myers draws on her own experiences as the daughter of white missionaries living in the Belgian Congo for this dazzling novel full of authentic African lore. Tamar Myers did an excellent job developing her characters, particularly The Witch Doctor, First Wife, Second Wife, and Amanda, the American missionary. Little by little, Amanda is drawn into the lives of the villagers in tiny Belle Vue -- and she is touched by the plight of the local witch doctor, a man known as Their Death, who has been forced to take a second job as a yardman to support his two wives. The characters were interesting, the setting was stunning, the mystery, however, was only average. But her enthusiasm cannot cushion her from the shock of a very foreign culture--where competing missionaries are as plentiful as flies, and oppressive European overlords are busy stripping the land of its most valuable resource: diamonds. This is a lush novel, rich with tension and intricately woven, believable characters. So this novel sounded like something I would enjoy.

Reading the Past: Book review: The Witch Doctor's Wife, by Tamar Myers

Tamar grew up eating elephant, hippopotamus and even monkey. Time spent reading The Witchdoctor's Wife is time very well spent! The story is an interesting one with very well depicted characters. I enjoyed best the author's knowledge about the people of the Congo, the nastiness of colonialism. Tamar Myers was born and raised in the Belgian Congo now just the Congo. This is such a different novel for Tamara Myers. Added to that, Amanda decides to hire a local as her assistant basically to irritate Protruding Navel.

I felt like the author got tired and decided just to finish it up quickly. Fiction doesn't work well with randomness - that's what real life is - storytelling should be different. Little by little, Amanda is drawn into the lives of the villagers in tiny Belle Vue - and she is touched by the plight of local witch doctor, a mane as Their Death, who has been forced to take a second job as a yardman to support his two wives. The discovery of a huge uncut diamond sets off a chain of unfortunate events leading to Cripple's being charged with murder. The couple Amanda is replacing at the Missionary Guest House are delayed in an outlaying village and she has to take charge and adjust to the culture without any guidance. Young Amanda Brown runs a Missionary Guesthouse.

The Witch Doctor's Wife (Amanda Brown #1) by Tamar Myers

Tamar and her family fled the Congo, but returned a year later. It was a book I almost had to force myself to finish because I didn't bond with any of the characters, so I didn't really care what happened. I wouldnt recommend this book to anyone. Rich and alive with the sights and sounds of the continent—as exciting, evocative, charming, and suspenseful as Alexander McCall Smith's No. This is a lush novel, rich with tension and intricately woven, believable characters. Back to The Witch Doctor's Wife, I stopped reading by page 102. This book carried me along because the scenes were so well set up, at least in the beginning.

Summary and reviews of The Witch Doctor's Wife by Tamar Myers

the witch doctor s wife myers tamar

. I thought this book was an interesting look at pre-independence Congo from an author who grew up there. Myers' makes that point several times during the story as well as the informative short paragraphs which introduce every chapter and tell the reader about the plants, animals and culture of the area. As the story develops, this reader found herself pulled back to the community, and anxiously awaiting the moment to pick up the book again to return to the richness of the fictional world. Though I do have questions about some of the characters, and why some of the people were not further elaborated on, I can appreciate the sense of mystery which was a result of this. But her enthusiasm cannot cushion her from the shock of a very foreign culture--where competing missionaries are as plentiful as flies, and oppressive European overlords are busy stripping the land of its most valuable resource: diamonds. But when First Wife stumbles upon an impossibly enormous uncut gem, events are set in motion that threaten to devastate the lives of these people Amanda has come to admire and love—events that could lead to nothing less than murder.

I really enjoyed this book. The story begins with the airplane Amanda arrives on crashing in the jungle that surrounds the landing strip. When a huge diamond is introduced into their lives a web of unfortunate events set off a tidal wave of dangers fueled by greed. The reader is transported to a time and place totally foreign and yet familiar. I thought that the story was more a comedy of errors than a mystery. This book was great for that. Rich and alive with the sights and sounds of the continent—as exciting, evocative, charming, and suspenseful as Alexander McCall Smith's No.

THE WITCH DOCTOR'S WIFE by Tamar Myers

There are too many side stories that are never really traced out, and the characters have lots of potential, but their relationships and how those tie in to the plot are never really developed. This is a lush novel, rich with tension and intricately woven, believable characters. But her enthusiasm cannot cushion her from the shock of a very foreign culture-where competing missionaries are as plentiful as flies, and oppressive European overlords are busy stripping the land of its most valuable resource: diamonds. From this book, I learned quite a bit about the Congo, formerly colonized by Belgium, and the animals and people who make their home here. Should easily be done before I get to meet the author later this week! Still, a good book, I feel that I learned something. Profits at the mine are not as high as stockholders would like.

The Witch Doctor's Wife will long linger in the hearts and minds of readers. Especially since it took place in Africa - by way of the Congo. I may search out her two mystery series: one centered on the owner of an antique store in Charlotte, and the other, Amish owner of a bed and breakfast in Pennsylvania. I loved that the characters were so expertly executed. Several of the characters return to the same Congo setting. I did have one problem with the book however: there were too many characters, and several of them didn't seem to have anything to do. Didn't anyone wonder where Heilewid, Flanders, Monique, or the Belgian disappeared to? I loved that the characters were new and refreshing with each page and their story and events never got redundant or boring.
